How about a snickers milkshake for dessert? This milkshake is vegan, gluten-free and it is extremely delicious. I was shocked to see some Snickers milkshake recipes using not just one but two or three original Snickers bars. Snickers is delicious, but I’d rather eat the bar as it is and make the milkshake using pretty wholesome ingredients – because it is totally possible! And this milkshake still tastes like dessert.
For a vegan milkshake you need…
Vegan ice cream. This is a must in my opinion, because it gives the shake the “milky” feel. Using a frozen banana instead of ice cream gives me smoothie vibes, and this is not a smoothie. This is a milkshake. I know ice cream isn’t the most wholesome ingredient, but with the next ingredient tip I’ll explain why you don’t need to use tons of ice cream.
Ice cubes. This is my little trick to make more “ice cream” without ice cream 🙂 You could use plant-milk cubes, too, which would be even better. But I rarely remember to make them, so ice cubes it is. And ice cubes won’t work without the next ingredient.
Barista style plant-based milk. This is a crucial ingredient together with the ice cubes, making a kind of sorbet style “ice cream” (which without anything else is not that good…but it is a good base for a milkshake!). I recommend a barista style milk because many plant-based milks are kind of watery, and barista style milks are thicker and creamier. They are SO good in milkshakes (and smoothies, and lattes…).
Basically that’s all you need 🙂
And then come the flavors!
So you can use the above as a base for the milkshake and then add these simple ingredients for flavor:
Vanilla milkshake
- vanilla bean paste or vanilla powder
- cashew butter or coconut butter too, for an extra creamy feel and taste
Chocolate milkshake
- all the vanilla shake ingredients and:
- melted dark or melted milk chocolate
- cocoa or cacao powder
Berry milkshake
- all the vanilla shake ingredients and:
- frozen berries of choice, please try strawberries – heavenly!
And now to the actual recipe, which is surprisingly simple. Now I know this is not like the original Snickers: this milkshake is not as sugary sweet, but it is still sweet and like dessert!
Vegan Snickers milkshake recipe
1 big or 2 smaller milkshakes
Milkshake:
- 1/2 cup vegan vanilla ice cream
- 1/2 cup ice cubes (about 5 ice cubes from an ice cube mold)
- 1/2 cup Barista style plant-based milk, I use Fazer Aito Barista Oat drink (not sponsored, I use this all the time in my coffee)
- 1/3 cup smooth peanut butter (I’m using a mildly salted one)
- pinch of salt, if the peanut butter you’re using is not salted
- 1 tbsp liquid sweetener of choice, if needed (I’m using brown rice syrup but maple syrup would be great too)
- 1 tbsp cacao or cocoa powder
Topping:
- about 1 cup vegan whipped cream
- 1-2 tsp cacao or cocoa powder for the whipped cream
- 1-2 pieces of vegan chocolate, shredded
- 1-2 tbsp crushed salted and roasted peanuts
Blend the ice cream, ice cubes, plant-based milk and peanut butter into a smooth milkshake. Taste, and add sweetener and salt if needed. Pour half of it into the serving jar or jars. Blend the rest with cacao or cocoa powder until smooth. Pour the rest of the milkshake into the serving jar or jars.
Mix whipped cream and cacao or cocoa powder together. Pipe the whipped cream on top and decorate with shredded chocolate and peanuts.
Enjoy!
ps If you don’t mind the banana flavor and smoothie like quality, you can of course use 1-2 frozen bananas instead of the ice cream and ice cubes.
